Achieving balance on vacation and trying to stay in some sort of routine can be HARD. And hey, you may not want to have any routine, maybe when you get away you want to unplug from your regular life. Perhaps you want to throw all your routines and usual habits out the window. That’s OKAY, LET LOOSE.
But if you’re like us, you may want to strike some sort of balance. Having balance is not because we don’t enjoy soaking in all that vacations have to offer. Trust me, I love eating and drinking whatever I want! 🤌🏻
But as we get older, the reality of your health and feeling your best sets in. If we let all of our routines fall by the way side for a week or more, it’s that much harder to get back into it when we get home. And truthfully, we just don’t feel as good! We believe there’s still a way to relax, to enjoy your vacation, eat and drink what you want, but still incorporate some of the habits that make you feel your best.
And this is how we do it.

Stay Active
There really isn’t an easier time to be active. If you’ve opted for a tropical vacation near the beach, there are endless ways to stay active. Daily walks on the beach, swimming, playing some sort of sport with friends and family, tennis, pickle ball, biking. The list goes on! Most hotels even have a gym you can use as a guest. So even if you prefer to lounge by the pool during the day, spend 45 minutes in the gym a few days a week, you’re already ahead for the day. Not only will this keep your body on its usual schedule if you’re used to being active, but it’ll make it easier to get back into routine once you’re home. And honestly, you’ll just feel better while on your trip! I recently went to Mexico and I was in the gym 6-7 days out of my 10 day trip, I really loved how it started my day off on the right foot. I’m not saying this to set certain expectations, purely just to share how great it felt and hope that it can be motivation for you to feel better too!
Stay Hydrated
Water is KEY on any day, it just makes you feel so much better. When you’re on vacation, keeping yourself hydrated not only helps in a hot climate to stay refreshed, but it’ll also help your body flush out foods and drinks that may not make you feel so good.
If you’re indulging in some alcoholic bevvies, water is going to make sure you don’t feel like total crap the next day. Think about brining some electrolyte packs and drinking them before bed. Whenever I have a night out now, I chug a big bottle of water before bed and if I add electrolytes, I feel so much better the next day. Compared to if I didn’t have them!
Food on vacation also tends to be more greasy, so having extra water in your system will help flush out the junk. Water will also help keep any headaches away that come with hot weather and dehydration. If you’re staying in a country where you aren’t sure if you can drink the water, buy a large jug at the store and keep it in your hotel room. This way you don’t need to keep buying the small plastic bottles which are bad for the environment and your health, and you can just keep refilling your reusable bottle!
Truly, water is the solution to so many of our problems.

Fill your plate up with fruits and vegetables
Colourful foods all the way! Having a mix of fresh fruit and veggies at every meal will not only help keep you more regular, but it’ll just keep your body balanced overall. A mix of colourful items on your plate provides different vitamins and minerals that you won’t get from eating pizza every night! Definitely induldge in the treats and incredible cuisine while travelling, that’s part of the whole experience. But if you can keep freshness at the top of your mind, you’re going to feel a lot better at the end of the trip.
Who doesn’t love fresh fruit from a tropical country? When we travel down south over the winter when coming from the cold Canadian weather, we just LOVE having access to fresh fruit. We could eat it all day long! Take advantage of the warmer growing climates and soak up those delicious nutrients.
Some food ideas could be:
- Smoothies
- Fresh mango
- Guacamole
- Pico De Gallo
- Watermelon
- Freshly squeezed juices
- Papaya
If you can, stay on some sort of sleep schedule.
This may be harder if you’re on an adults only trip! I know when I travelled in my 20s, there was no way I was staying on a sleep schedule. I was out exploring or enjoying the night life and didn’t think too much about getting to bed by 10pm! LOL
But now that I’m a bit older and do happen to travel with kids, I actually find the pattern of going to bed by 10pm and up between 6-7am, quite refreshing! Your body thrives on a sleep schedule, it not only improves your overall sleep quality, but it also boosts immunity and your overall alertness. Waking up before everyone else gives you some quiet time in the morning, it allows for time to go to the gym, to enjoy a relaxing coffee, maybe some time with your partner without distractions. It’s actually quite lovely. Staying consistent in your sleep also helps you get adjusted quicker once you get home and back to routine. So if that sounds like something you’d be able to do, highly recommend giving it a try!

Bring Your Supplements
Certain supplements can go a long way when travelling. They may just give you that extra boost of goodness your body is craving. Two key products we love to take while travelling are: the Arrae De-Bloat pills, within an hour of a big meal they can help bring bloating down a lot! And we swear by electrolytes, my personal favourites are the Organika travel packs. They have no sugar or caffeine and are a great source of hydration, and vitamin C. Additional support like these products are totally optional, but they come in handy when you need an extra boost!
So what do you think? Do you feel that achieving balance on vacation is more possible after reading this post? It may not be for everyone, but if you’re looking to start feeling better when travelling and having an easier time adjusting to your routine once you get home. These points will hopefully help you with that! Once you’re back from vacation, you may need a reset!
