Vegan Hot Chocolate Ingredients

Store-bought hot chocolate mixes can have a lot of ingredients, many of which you don’t really need to make great hot chocolate! (dairy milk powder, oils, stabilizers, preservatives, and the list goes on…) Check out the simple list of ingredients that you’ll need to make an easy and delicious homemade hot chocolate:

  • Non Dairy Milk: Oat milk is my go to, but feel free to use your favourite plant based milk.
  • Brown sugar + cocoa powder: This sweet and creamy hot cocoa starts with brown sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder.
  • Salt: A pinch of salt enhances the flavour and helps round out the profile of the hot chocolate.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups unsweetened dairy free milk
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1-3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup dairy free chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate bar
  • tiny pinch of salt
  • optional topping ideas: coconut whip cream, vegan marshmallows or shaved chocolate

Instructions

  • In a medium pot, add the dairy free milk, unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 tablespoon of sugar and chocolate chips.
  • Turn the heat to medium, and whisk to combine as the mixture warms. The chocolate chips will slowly melt and it will become smooth and creamy. Do NOT bring the mixture to a boil, just heat and whisk until it’s warm and smooth, then remove from heat.
  • Add a tiny pinch of salt and stir.
  • Taste for sweetness; add 1-2 more tablespoons of brown sugar for a sweeter drink (I prefer it less sweet, but it’s easy to adjust and add more sugar for a sweeter option)
  • Pour into mugs and top with coconut whip, or vegan marshmallows, if desired. Enjoy!
