Re-think Your Resolutions! 6 Steps to Make Your Goals *Actually* Happen This Year

A New Years Reset

A new year is almost upon us. How are you feeling about your goals for the year gone by? Take a moment to reflect. What worked? What didn’t? Is there room for improvement? We can take a lesson from every year gone by. And look, this blog isn’t meant to highlight what you didn’t do. We don’t vibe like that!

Our goal here is to have us all take some much needed reflection time, to really understand how our year unfolded and why it went the way it did. Maybe you crushed your goals out of the park and you’re feeling super proud of yourself. Or perhaps there’s room for improvement, maybe your goal list didn’t exactly pan out the way you had hoped it would. That’s ok! A new year is all about fresh starts. In this week’s blog we’re going to break down 6 steps to make your goals actually happen this year! Every year we can bring in a little bit of room for improvement.

For Meg and myself, we both had different goals and outlooks for 2024, no two people are going to have the same desires and action plans. But something we do share in common is our hope to feel content, healthy, full of purpose and a shared sense of success in our career endeavours. Oh and to keep sharing the blog with all of you!

So we ask you, what are your desires for 2025 and how do you plan to make them happen?

1. Reflect

First things first, you can’t move forward if you haven’t reflected on the past. No one’s journey is linear or without any challenges. We need to take a look back at our years to give ourselves a pat on the back for what we checked off of our goal’s list, but we also want to see the areas that can be improved. Pull out your agenda, a journal or your computer and take stock.

And if you’re in the mood for some prompts to help you get this started, check out our mindset and journalling posts. There are plenty to choose from to get your creative and reflection juices flowing!

2. Map Out The Big Picture

Next step: Know your vision. Where do you want to go in the year ahead? How do you want to feel? What do you want your family, personal, health, career and love life to look? You choose! We like to break up our goals into sections of our lives.

For myself personally, I break down my goals between the following categories:

  • Creative
  • Financial
  • Career
  • Health
  • Family/Friends/Personal

Whereas Meg’s looks like this:

  • Business
  • Financial Mindset
  • Work from Home Life
  • Health & Wellness Era
  • Relationships & Personal
  • Comfy, Cozy Home

Create the categories that feel best for you. And feel free to create your own system, it doesn’t have to be broken down into categories. The goals can be written out however works best for you!

3. Break Your Goals Down Into Measurable Steps & Timelines

We like to set our yearly goals into the categories you see above, but then we break it down even further. From there, we set quarterly goals that reflect and help us achieve our year goals. (Every 3 months, 4 times a year). And then from there, we like to set monthly intentions that help us achieve those quarterly goals. It’s a whole process, but it works for us!

And Don’t Forget the SMART Goals Method

I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but make sure to set goals that are realistic and that you’ll stick to. Try utilizing the SMART goals method. This is a studied and proven way to support you on your goal setting journey.

  • Specific: The objective is clear and states what will be done and who will do it
  • Measurable: The objective includes how progress will be measured
  • Achievable: The objective is realistic and can be achieved given the available resources
  • Relevant: The objective makes sense and fits the purpose of the goal
  • Time-bound: The objective has a realistic deadline

4. Know Your Why – What is your purpose?

If you don’t have a purpose or a “why” behind your goals, you’re less likely to give much care to them. Everything worth working for in life has a purpose. Something we learned in theatre school, about portraying a character and actually being believable was: “You have to know your why. What are your character’s intentions? WHY are they choosing to act the way they do, what do they want?” This was the method behind every character development.

This tells true in real life too. Let’s say you want to make $10,000 in your side hustle this year. WHY do you want that? Will it allow you to go on more trips? Will it help you provide for your family better? Or let’s say you want to walk 7,000 steps a day this year. Do you want to feel better? Do you want to move your body more? Every goal has an intention behind it.

5. Visualize / Manifest

I’m sure you’ve heard the term, manifesting. Now manifesting doesn’t make your goals come true without actual disciple and hard work! But it does make a difference. Coming from someone who has been vision boarding since childhood, my vision boards legit have come true. It’s pretty cool actually.

Though you can’t expect to just think about things and not actually take the steps to get there. Let’s say you want to buy a new car by the end of the year. That was something on my vision board this year. I picked up extra work, I found ways in my current spending to make it happen, I didn’t give up. And you know what? I just bought my dream car!

Or let’s say you want to take a trip down south. Put it on your vision board, manifest it. But then think, what steps are you going to take to get there? It all comes down to goal setting.

6. Keep yourself accountable

Sticking to your goals isn’t always easy! We all go through ups and downs with our goals and what we want out of the year. Maybe our goals shift as the year goes on, that’s ok too! But remember, if you are working towards something you really care about, keep yourself accountable. Having a buddy you can check in with on a monthly or quarterly basis helps as well. What we don’t want is for us to set goals, do a new years reset, and then forget about everything by March. Write things down, say them out loud and hold yourself accountable.
