Goal Setting for beginners. Why Your Goals Didn’t Work. {And how to fix that in 2026}

Stop making the same mistakes. Learn the art of goal setting and let 2026 be your year of growth.

We’ve all been there. Setting goals to set our lives up for success, dreaming and scheming up ideas that make us amped up for the year ahead. A few months later? You forget your specific goals and go on with life as if nothing has changed.

It’s totally normal, trust us! If you’re someone who sets big goals for the year or a new year resolution, only to forget about it a few months later, you aren’t alone.

But let’s change that. Let’s make 2026 the year you shift your perspective on goals.

Goal setting takes a few key actions to create success. Make your goals specific, measurable, and watch the difference unfold.

Why Your Goals Aren’t Working

92% of people don’t actually stick to the goals they set out to achieve. Isn’t that wild?

So let’s break it down. How could that number even be possible?! It’s not necessarily lack of ambition. It’s actually a lack of a realistic and actionable plan. If you’re casually stating goals but have no action plan behind them, there’s a good chance that goal is not going to happen.

Maybe your values aren’t aligned with those goals. Or perhaps you under estimate what achieving that goal is actually going to take. It’s important to be somewhat realistic with your goals. And sometimes we shouldn’t put a timeline on our goals, something you set out to work on in 2026, may not unfold until 2028.

A longer timeline has happened to me personally quite often, and it’s actually ok! Life doesn’t always unfold as instantly as we sometimes want it to.

Here’s what to do instead.

First things first. Come up with your set of goals. It could be 3-5 ideas that you’re looking to make happen in 2026.

For example. Maybe you want to run a half marathon, you want to find a new job, you want to develop a deeper relationship with your partner or friend group or maybe you want to save for a downpayment on a house. Whatever your goals are, write them on paper.

I personally like to break my goals down into categories. Health, financial, career & personal. I then note a few goals for each category. But you break it down however works best for you!

Then you’ll want to come up with an action plan. Remember, SMART Goals.

SpecificCreate a clear goal, make it as concise as possible.

Measurable Make sure you can measure your progress throughout the year.

AchievableTry to keep it realistic, is this a goal you can achieve in the next 1-5 years? Feel free to make shorter and longer term goals!

RelevantDoes the goal align with your lifestyle and values?

Time-BoundGive yourself a check-in or deadline. Maybe it’s a goal you want to complete in 1 year.

If you can keep those points in mind while setting your goals, and actually keep your action plan in mind, you’ll see a big difference in how your goals unfold.

Takeaways

Setting goals doesn’t need to be confusing or overwhelming. It comes down to creating.

So why not take a bit of extra time to set yourself up for success? Instead of just stating goals, take the time to come up with your action plan behind them. Really imagine your life when you achieve those goals and take a moment to go through the steps of how you’re going to make them happen.

If you want to take it a step further, perhaps you create your dream routine and what your life would look like upon achieving these goals.
